Form coaching
Good reps.Every session.
Garrett watches every rep and corrects it in the moment, so you build strength that holds up. Clear cues, no jargon, and no guessing whether you are doing it right.
How the coaching works
Form coaching is not a separate add-on. It is part of every session, built into your custom program.
01
Watch
Garrett sees how you move before changing anything: your squat, your hinge, your push-up, how you carry weight.
02
Fix one thing
One clear cue at a time, in plain words. A pile of corrections at once just makes you stiff and confused.
03
Repeat
The fix gets practiced until it is boring. Light weight first, so the pattern is solid before it is loaded.
04
Own it
You learn what good reps feel like, so you can train well on the days Garrett is not in the room.
What Garrett watches for
The same handful of movements show up in almost every program, so they get the most attention. This is a general look at the basics, not a plan for you. Check with your doctor before starting any new training.
Squat
- Knees tracking over the toes, not caving in
- Heels staying planted
- A neutral spine at the bottom
- Depth you can control
Hinge and deadlift
- Hips going back, not the back rounding
- The bar or weight staying close to your legs
- Bracing before you pull
- Standing up by squeezing the glutes, not leaning back
Push and row
- A straight line from head to heels in the push-up
- Elbows at a smart angle, not flared
- Shoulder blades moving on the row
- No shrugging up to the ears
Carries and core
- Standing tall with the ribs stacked over the hips
- Not leaning away from the heavy side
- Breathing while you brace
- Steady, controlled steps
Why it matters more than weight
Heavy weight with sloppy reps is a fast way to get hurt, and a slow way to get stronger. Clean reps load the muscles you are trying to train, keep joints happy and make progress something you can repeat month after month.
That is the chop wood, carry water version of fitness: do the basics well, and keep doing them. New to training? Start with the beginner personal training page, or read how Garrett progresses strength training once your form is solid.
Common questions
- I have never lifted. Is form coaching for me?
- It is built for you. Every client starts where they are. Garrett teaches the basic patterns (squat, hinge, push, pull, carry) with light weight or just your bodyweight, and adds load only when the movement is solid.
- How is this different from watching videos or using an app?
- A video cannot see you. Garrett watches your actual reps, from the angles that matter, and corrects them while you are still under the bar. That feedback loop is the whole point.
- What if I have an injury or something hurts?
- Garrett is a personal trainer, not a medical professional. If you have pain or an injury, check with your doctor first, then tell Garrett before the session. He will work around it and will not push through pain.
- Do I need equipment?
- No special setup is needed to start. Your first session is an assessment, and Garrett will talk through what makes sense for your space. A pair of dumbbells and a resistance band cover a lot.
- Where do sessions happen?
- At your home, by default: Garrett comes to you in Venice, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, Playa Vista, Culver City, Mar Vista, and Playa del Rey, within about 6 miles of Venice. You can also train at his private home gym near Venice Beach.
